LUCUGNANO

The toponym of Lucugnano derives, according to some scholars, from the Roman noble Lucullus or from Latin Lucus Jani, namely wood consecrated to the God Janus. That is confirmed by the existence in the area of the wood of Belvedere which, in times past, stretched in the territory between Ruffano, Supersano and the Adriatic Coast. Probably the hamlet of Lucugnano arised under the Roman republic occupation. Information of its existence are dating back to 1092, when the Norman Count Godefroy bequeathed it to Basilian monks. Subsequentely Lucugnano was Capeces, Tranes and Alfarano Capeces feoff.

Monuments
Among the historical buildings are worth of mention the sixteenth century Castle or Capece’s Baronal Palace intended along with the castles of Caprarica, Tutino, Depressa and Tricase, to defence from Turkish raids; the palace seat of provincial Library, originally property of the local poet Girolamo Comi.
On the contrary, among the religious faith buildings, are noteworthy the church of Maria Santissima Assunta in Cielo, with six altars, besides the high altars and numerous religious chapels; Saint Joseph (XVIII century), along the provincial road Lucugnano-Montesano; Saint Francis (1719), in De Vasai’s street; Holy Cross (1710), in the square bearing the same name; Madonna delle Grazie (end of XVIII century), in Delle Grazie’s street; Saint Rocco (1969) in the same street.

Important personages
Besides Girolamo Comi (1830-1968), baron and hermetic poet, Lucugnano is famous for Papa Galeazzo or “Papa Caliazzu”, witty dean, author of jokes (in vernaculus “li cunti”), and funny episodes, on whose existence there are several doubts; for some people this add character was the fruit of popular imagination, for other people he really lived in the seventeenth century.

Handicraft
Lucugnano is also known by reputation for the workmanship of the clay, activity developed in the past century, and favoured by
the presence in its territory of clay sediments of different colours, particularly suitable for pottery.
